Expert Solution

Needs and desires are quite similar concepts which are often used as substitute for each other. In most of the situations our needs and desires overlap with each other. But if we go in depth analysis of their meaning, a difference can be descerned between the two words. Often we think theat what we desire is our need and what we need is our desire. This is the main confusion that most of the people face.

Need is something that can be attributed by the words essential, necessary, requirement. Need is labeled with survival. Need refer to those that are necessary for our survival. Example of needs is the basic needs of human being i.e. food, clothing and shelter. Without these things one cannot survive.Love from our family and friends is also a need because without that we feel lonely and separated. Hence we cannot live without love. Satifying our need is necessary as they are essential for our survival.

On the other hand desire is something that we want. It is not necessary for our survuival. If one fails to achieve what he desires, it should not be life threatening for him. Our desires are forever growing as we wish to accomplish more and more in our life. Desires are endless. We always work hard to achieve things that we desire.Sometimes never ending desires pop up trouble in human life as they cannot satisfy themselves with their achievements.

We can find out the difference between needs and desire with a small example. Suppose David is feeling thirsty after a days work under scorching sun. In this circumstances there are two options before him must require to drink a glass of water to quench his thirst. This is need for him. But after having a glass of water he may wish to drink a bottle of milkshake. This is regarded as desire of him. Milkshake is not necessary for quenching his thirst while water is. Though in most of the situations it becomes really difficult to draw the fine line between needs and desires, we must know that needs and desires are not same.

The correct alternative for the above question is: A. No, desires refer to things that a person would like to have to meet a specific need, according to the environment and culture in which he lives, while the needs refer to basic requirements of a person.

Peace is always regarded as a need. Peace is requirement for everybode. It is necessary for survival. Both mental and physical peace is essential for a person to live a healthy life. Hence it cannot be regarded as desire.
