The business model created by the development of a network of railroads across America is as follows:

The earliest commercial tramroad in the United States that was drawn by John Thompson in Pennsylvania in October 1809 entitled as Draft Exhibiting and contemplated by Thomas Leiper Esq. from his stone saw mill and quarries on Curm Creek to his Landing on Ridley Creek.

Thomas Leiper being a rich tobacconist from Philadelphia was a very fast friend of Thomas Jefferson..the owner of the stone quarries near Chester. Therefore, using the Thompson's map the well known project manager namely Reading Howell constructed the first tramroad made up of wooden tracks.

Hence, after the successful construction of the wooden tramroad connectivity they started doing trade practices of tobacco and stones from and to their locations in persuit of earning profits, which helped their cause and gave birth to the .businesses after the development of network railroad across America.
