Good evening!! i would need ideas about the following text; !) John Stuart-On liberty. i need to make a 1-page essay response.; Keep in mind what Mill has argued in this short essay on free speech. imagine this person is invited to your school, and further, that speaker holds views that are demeaning to some members of the student body.Would John Stuart Mill think it’s permissible to allow that person to speak? Why? This essay requires you to argue, with some kind of evidence from our text (include at least one cited quote) about what Mill thinks. ( !), (argue how Mill would think, based on the text.).
John Stuart Mill is one of the most important figures in history whose work on liberty still remains a hit. He provides three types of liberty such as, liberty to freedom of speech, liberty to plan and live one's life and liberty to join with like minded people for a common cause without hurting others. He suggests that human beings are weak and that they may tend to make mistakes thus it becomes very important for one to try different ways of living but it should be for the betterment of self and the society.
Having all these in mind, Mill would appreciate the speaker to go on with his speech because the first element of liberty is freedom of speech although there is a condition that one should not hurt others. I would like to take it in a different way that one should not hurt one purposely. So, the speaker is expressing only his viewpoint. There are only few who would disagree with his speech while the majority may accept it. Mill's other argument which suggests that human beings are fallible and that they should try different life styles thus experimenting new things in order to progress.
Another important thing is that people should try not to hurt others at any time but people should try things that would help both the person and the society progress. It should be viewed as a different point of view rather than taking it more personal and feel hurt. Mills would agree with the person on all the three points that he proposed that the person should continue talking.
