The quest for discoveries if new sea route began in 15th century when Columbus first find a sea route from Atlantic to asia. for the next 3 to 4 centuries , the quest was on to find even new and novel sea routes.

By 1845, the combined discoveries of all of these expeditions had discovered al areas leaving very small unknown parts of Canadian Arctic . And in this unknown area that Franklin was to sail, heading west through Lancaster sound and then west and south as ice, land, and other obstacles might allow, to complete the Northwest Passage.
