After reading Chapter 9 of the textbook, discuss the following questions to the best of your abilities:

-Let's pretend that you recently moved from Italy to the United States. How can you adjust to a new society and connect to people in a different community?

-In your own words, state what does “living in a diverse world” mean to you?

-Name two positive effects and two negative effects of using communication technology.

-Define “prejudice” and name three causes of prejudice.

-Describe why “I” statements are so important to successful communication with a close friend or partner.

Important notice: Your professor will consider these elements when assessing the quality and level of student participation.

Submit initial post(s) early in the session and subsequent responses to the posts of other learners at timely intervals throughout the duration of the session. The goal is to have a dynamic discussion around the topic that lasts throughout the entire session.

Your original post should be within a range of 75-100 words. If a post does not meet the minimum word count of 75, your professor will not count it toward your grade.

Your subsequent contributions responding to a classmate should have 50 to 100 words.

Adjusting to a new society, country or community can be really hard at first, especially if there are too many differences in terms of the soci-cultural environment, values, belief systems and practices that prevail. However, when a person is flexible in his or her approach and is open to adapting themselves to a new environment and a perspective, it becomes relatively easy to adjust and cope. Connecting with othersand going an extra mile to be a part of this new society gives people the space to become a part of them slowly and gradually. Living in a diverse world simply means that many nations now are becoming more and more culturally diversified, giving the space for different kinds of people to live together harmoniously. Multicultural way of life gives a chance for different ideologies, values, thoughts and belief systems to be merged together in a way that the best out of each can be adapted and used in order to improvise on the quality of life.

Two positive effects of communication technology are the way it boosts industrialization and changes the way in which organizations operate today. Another is the communication pattern on individual level as well as the larger economic value that this new revolution adds. The negatuve influence is the online harrassment, bullying or hacking that puts most people and organizations at risk today. Another impact is the addictive impact it can have on the more vulnerable sections of the society. It has changed the job profiles as well, making certain job kinds to become more and more redundant with time.

Prejudice is a pre judgment that a person may hold regarding something or someone. It may also be a negative attitude or hostility towards a certain community. Its main causes are early conditioning provided to people. This means that early experiences and messages from the immediate environment that we receive tend to play a crucial role in the way we view the world as adults. Discrimination and different belief systems that prevail impact how such attitudes are formed thereafter.

I statements are important to be used during conversations so as to make people accept responsibility for their own actions. Sometimes individuals tend to attribute these outside of them, therefore in order to promote 'blaming to claiming', I statements tend to help in very many ways.
