1. The separation of sunlight into component colors by means of a prism is called (a) diffraction, (b) dispersion, (c) refraction, (d) reflection.

2. Monochromatic light transmitted into a prism cannot be (a) refracted, (b) reflected by1800, (c) internally reflected, (d) dispersed.

3. Which of the following colors of light is refracted more in a typical transparent medium? (a) blue, (b) yellow, (c) green, (d) red.

4. Dispersion is responsible for (a) diffuse reflection, (b) spherical aberration, (c) chromatic aberration, (d) polarization.

5. The appearance of a “wet spot” on a hot highway in the summer is caused by    (a) polarization, (b) reflection, (c) refraction, (d) aberration.

6.Light enters a more optically dense medium at (a) θ12, (b) θ12, (c) θ12 ,    (d) θ1c .

Solutions

Expert Solution

1. The separation of sunlight into component colors by means of a prism is called dispersion, it is the observed because different colours or wavelengths travel with different speeds in a given media (say prism). hence we obtain a 7 coloured spectra of sunlight after passing it through prism.

2. Monochromatic light transmitted into a prism cannot be dispersed, it is so because phenonemnon of dispersion is based on the fact that different wavelengths travel with different speeds in a given media but in a monochromatic light there is only one wavelength and hence dispersion is not possible.

3. red colour is refracted more in a transparent medium because it has the greatest wavelength and hence suffers the minimum deviation.

4. Dispersion is responsible for chromatic aberration , because different colours travel with different speeds in a lens giving rise to chromatic abberation.

5. The appearance of a “wet spot” on a hot highway in the summer is caused by REFLECTION, it happens when highway gets hot , the refractive index of air near the rod is decreased and hence the rays of light coming from upper atmosphere suffers total internal reflection and we get to see a wet spot

Imagine, you are taking a prism to split the sunlight into it's spectrum of colors. You further place a thermometer or temperature probe into each of the three resulting color areas blue, yellow, and red (see schematic). Which thermometer do you expect to show the highest temperature and why? Now imagine additionally that you take a fourth thermometer and place it in the area just outside/beyond the red region of your visible spectrum. How would you expect the temperature reading...

Minnesota Manufacturing makes a component called Upper B2040. This component is manufactured only when ordered by a customer, so Mississippi keeps no inventory of Upper B2040. The list price is $114 per unit, but customers who place "large" orders receive a 14% discount on price. The customers are manufacturing firms. Currently, the salespeople decide whether an order is large enough to qualify for the discount. When the product is finished, it is packed in cases of 10.
