As of end May 2020, during a period of severe unemployment in the USA, there were over 570,000 Knowledge Manager jobs advertised on Indeed.com. This compares with 4,300 Financial Manager jobs and 13,000 Operations Manager jobs at the same time on the same platform.
Your task is to prepare a report for a jobs agency director on the topic of: Preparing Candidates for the Role of Knowledge Manager. The report is intended to help prepare unemployed managers (the ‘candidates’) for a career change to Knowledge Management roles, thus increasing their potential success in finding a new job. The report should cover the following topics:
1. A brief explanation of the term ‘Knowledge Management’
2. An explanation for the fast-growing interest on the part of companies to employ Knowledge Managers
3. A description of what a Knowledge Manager is expected to undertake (job processes) and what s/he is expected to achieve (job objectives)
4. Key competencies that a Knowledge Manager should have or acquire in order to be eligible for such roles
Answer: Knowledge management is the conscious process of defining, structuring, retaining and sharing the knowledge and experience of employees within an organization. The main objective of knowledge management is to improve an organization's efficiency and save knowledge within the company. There are 3 key elements of knowledge management :
1) Accumulating knowledge
2) Storing knowledge
3) Sharing knowledge
It enables organizational learning and create a learning culture, where the sharing of knowledge is encouraged and those who seek to learn to better themselves find it easy to do so.
Eg: Tableau's knowledge base that includes a search feature so users can get answers to specific solutions as well as top articles and product-specific navigation.
Knowledge managers should be employed by organisation because they boosts the efficiency of an organization's decision-making ability by making sure that all employees have access to the overall expertise held within the organization, a smarter workforce is built who are more able to make quick, informed decisions that benefit the company.
The knowledge manager is responsible for promoting and utilizing the company’s knowledge assets. They work both internally through the company and externally with the company’s capitalist, stakeholder and client. They serve as consultants to promote the oneness of each department of the company and assess how information can be spreaded to each section in a smooth and systematic process.
Basic role performed by Knowledge Manager :
1) To create joint activities with the knowledge management team and the company partners through workshops, meetings, trainings, etc
2) Strengthening connection to aid information exchange within the systems and gives support to establish unity in the organization by implementing new ideas.
3) Executing info technology within the company that design and analyze networks in the computer for easier distribution of information and formulates action plans.
4) Manager also need to enhance and makes sure that new knowledge are applied in the company’s system that improves and modifies the knowledge management structure of the company.
In order to be Knowledge Manager, one must possess graduation in Business or Social Science. Some companies would only require a certification in Knowledge management. Moreover, it is important to know the company’s structure and system, hence, organisation may require an experienced employee in this field.
