Show that RC has units of seconds if R is in ? and C is in F

Solutions

Expert Solution

Consider the equation for a capacitor:    q = CV     or   C = q/V

The standard unitsare        Farad = Coulomb /Volt

And consider ohms law:    V = IR        or     R = V/I

Standard unitsare:               ohm = Volt / Amp

Now... if we multiply together    RC    we get units of     ohm *Farad which are

(Volt / Amp) * (Coulomb /Volt)        we can cancel"Volt" and we have

Coulomb /Amp                 But an Amp is a coulomb / second   so

Coulomb / (Coulomb / sec)   is       sec      DONE!
