An activist is basically a person who rallies and campaigns for social reform and brings forth much required changes in a society. A person does not have to be a revolutionary, a loud or rebellious person., rather they ought to be firm, resilient and committed to the cause. The traits that the activists have in common include high emotional intelligence, empathy, not being indifferent to situations and events around them, sense of fairness, open mindedness, enthusiasm, flexibility, attentiveness, humility, bravery, leadership etc. They bring in social change in every strata of society, the value they bring is transformational, they uphold individual rights, bring in transparency and work for overall peace and harmony in society. The degree we rely on activists to “fight the good fights” for us is very high. Without them there would be no other ‘social cleaners and cleansers’ who will do the work of cleaning our systems of apathy, discrimination, violation of rights etc. We all must learn to be more active in shaping society by doing our individual bit and contribute in any capacity that we can. The reason is, as members of a society we all have a primary responsibility in seeing to the society operate in an effective and seamless way. We are duty bound to take care of each other in a community for its peaceful functioning. The learning I found interesting is that anybody can be an activist in his or her own, you don’t have to be someone ‘big’ to effect a change in society, we all are equally capable of it. What surprised me is reading about the various activists and their self-sacrificing behaviors and selfless services to benefit humankind. My information to a friend will involve the benefits of being socially aware and responsible, how together we all can make a positive change in others lives.
