The Kwik-Freez Appliance Co wants you to design a food freezer that will keep the freezing compartment at -5.00?C and will operate in a room at 20.0?C. The freezer is to make 4.20kg of ice at 0 ?C, starting with water at 20.0?C.

Find the least possible amount of electrical energy needed to make this ice.

Find the smallest possible amount of heat expelled into the room.

For thesmallest amount of electrical energy:

Qin=(4.20kg)(4190J/kg*K)(20K) +(4.20kg)(334*103J/K)

Qin=1.76*106

Carnotcycle:

Qin / Tcold = Qout / Thot

1.76 x 10^6 / 268 = Qout / 293

Qout =

Qout =1.92*106 J (into the room)

W =Qout - Qin =1.92*106 J -1.76*106 J

W =0.16*105 J (electrical energy)
