Psychologists use a number of research methods. Some of them are:
- Correlational research: In this type of research, the purpose is to identify the relationship between two variables of interest. Though this type of research does not help to establish causal relationship, it is very helpful to understand the relationship that exists between to variables. The results obtained for this research can be analysed by using correlational statistical techniques.
- Experimental Research: This type of research involves conducting a true experiment. A true experiment has a independent and dependent variable. The independent variable is manipulated and it's effect on the dependent variable is analysed. This type of research is helpful is establishing causal relationship. There can be different levels of independent variable under different conditions that a researcher wants to assess.
- Observational Study: This type of research involves observing people in their natural environment and analysing their behaviour. There are various types of observational studies like participant and non-participant observation; overt and covert observation; and naturalistic and controlled observation.
- Case studies: Case studies involve in-depth analysis of a person or an event. Case studies can be done by using observations or interviews. The data obtained for this study can be analysed using different theories.
