Do the important human benefits of factory farming outweigh the disutility of the animal suffering? As you discuss this, apply of one or more of the four aspects (Scope, Duration, Intensity, Probability) that Bentham provided.
As the population increased, food supply also increased drastically which led to factory farming. It was also contributed by lack of farm lands due to the expansion of the industries. Thus, factory farming introduced growing animals just for consuming them in the future. Whether or not the animals move into the natural surrounding or grown in factory farming condition, they would be consumed either by men or other animals. Thus, it’s part of the food chain, besides, animals do not have any consciousness thus, they may not know how they live or experience pleasure. This would mean the scope of such animal is the food for human beings which is necessary and the duration is very short because in place of the animals, human beings can also consume vegetables which they wouldn’t. The suffering of the animals in this context is certain but the intensity of the pleasure for human beings is more while consuming the animals and the suffering of the animals would also be lifelong.
