Discuss the main causes of ambient air pollution and the influence that urbanization has on ambient air quality and health. What actions can be taken to reduce air pollution emissions? Consider possibilities at the individual, community, national, and international levels. How can air quality be monitored and improved as a global initiative?

Solutions

Expert Solution

Ambient air pollution is nothing but air pollution in the surrounding environment. these can be caused because of various reasons. main contributors for air pollution being particulate matter, ozone, nitrogen dioxide and other particles in excess amount in the air.

main causes of air pollution being traffic , combustion and agriculture, domestic fuel burning, industrial dust and activities along with construction dust.

urban ambient air pollution is a particular or specific term related to cities based on the particular pollution pertaining to urban areas.both short term and long term exposure to this type of air qualities might result in serious health issues such as heart strokes, lung and respiratory issues, and cancers.particular rungs of life cycle such as children and elderly get more affected.

initiatives at various levels:

1) car pooling and usage of public transport at individual level might help to reduce vehicular pollution.

2)policies encouraging usage of electric vehicles and clean and renewable energy must be brought at the national level.

3) at community level people must be provided with the awareness about the concerned pollution.

4)to improve air quality cycling and walking must be encouraged as a mode of transport.

International agencies which look after health and climate change such as WHO (world health organisation), IPCC ( intergovernmental panel on climate change) must take the initiative to improve air quality around the world through legislations.

sensor systems , point monitors, automatic sampling are few methods can be used to monitor ambient air pollution.
