3. Classify each of the following variables as either qualitative, quantitative discrete, or quantitative continuous.
(a) The amount of time it takes to assemble a piece of furniture from IKEA.
(b) The number students who identify as female in STAT 2507 B during the Summer 2020 semester.
(c) The province or territory where somebody lives in Canada.
(d) The weight of a newborn infant.
(e) A person’s lucky number. (e.g. My lucky number is 5.)
SOLUTION:
There are two types of Variabes
1.Quantitative(continuos or discrete).
Quantitative variables take numerical values, and represent some kind of measurement.
In general, a Discrete variable is one that is counted.
In general, a continuous variable is one that is measured, not counted. for example: Height, Weight ,Temperature, time, distance - all are continuous variables.
2.Qualitative/Categorical Variable(nominal or ordinal).
. Now,Classify each of the following variables as either qualitative, quantitative discrete, or quantitative continuous.
(a) The amount of time it takes to assemble a piece of furniture from IKEA is a Quantitative Continuous Variable.
(b) The number students who identify as female in STAT 2507 B during the Summer 2020 semester is a Quantitative Discrete Variable.
(c) The province or territory where somebody lives in Canada is a Categorical/Qualitative Variable(nominal).
(d) The weight of a newborn infant is a Quantitative Continuous Variable.
(e) A person’s lucky number is a Quantitative Discrete Variable.
