A) Quantitative vs. Qualitative variables – write an example of each.
B) Discrete or Continuous? – for the quantitative variable example you noted in part (A) above, is it discrete or continuous?
C) For each of the following questions, you will be identifying the independent variable(s) (IV) and the dependent variable(s) (DV), then operationally defining them.
1. Does people’s level of self-esteem influence how hard they
try to succeed at achievement tasks? IV: Op. Def:
DV: Op. Def:
2. Does eating kale improve digestion?
IV: Op. Def: DV: Op. Def:
3. Does viewing certain types of fashion designs influence
feelings of well being? IV: Op. Def:
DV: Op. Def:
4. Are children’s fashion preferences influenced by peers fashion styles? IV: Op. Def: DV: Op. Def:
5. Does smoking while pregnant increase the risk that the
newborn will have a low birth weight? IV: Op. Def:
DV: Op. Def:
6. Does calcium supplements affect bone density?
IV: Op. Def: DV: Op. Def:
Answer A)
Qualitative variables are those that can't be counted numerically. For example. Skin color, eye color, sugars, salts, age, grains.
Quantitative variables are those that we measure in quantity, that we can count. For example. books, chalks, pens, speed, distance.
Answer B)
Discrete are variables that we can count but it may go to infinity, sometimes it is immposible to count.
Continuous are countable numbers.
examples I presented in part A of quantitative variables are continuous values.
Answer C)
1) Stress, Anger, Depression- they are independent variables. They can affect a person's self esteem and it can be seen in their work. No person can think clearly in stress, anger or depression condition, instead of making up their work, they will definitly end up doing something wrong as a result by suffering fom these anxity they will never achieve success for sure.
Dependendent variables- Happiness, motivated, excitement- these things promotes one's self esteem, as when they are happy, there will be no thing left to worry, mind is free to think anythink and then person's hard work make them to achieve success in their life.
2)IV- chewing time, proteins: obviously chewing time also define our metabolic activity, for how log we keep kale in mouth and chewed it. chewing for longer time helps in better digestion of food.
DV-amount of food intake, the time it took for your digestion.
3)IV- research in designs: as research is a huge term to define cutting in short in simple means as if see new fashion designs, it makes us feel good as well as bad at a same time, we are in a mixed emotions of thinking whether we should try this or not, how will i look and what people will think likeise.
DV- when we already have knowledge of fashion design, we dont need to think what i look like and what others think.
4)IV- social status: yes it does affect. if ous peers fashions are good everyone will like to change according to fashion styles.
DV- copying of your peer- well this is not good, one should have their own personality and features that make them different. If they are copying their every stuff then its not a good thing, it means child is loosing his own identity. A child need to learn from peers and use them in their own style.
5)IV-lung infection: yes its does affect new born baby. Fresh air that mother is receiving same air also passes through baby. cigrattes have niccotine, smoking may lead to low supply of fresh air to baby.
DV- consumption of cigrattee on daily basis.
6)IV- supplement of vitamin D: as we grow up calicim level decreases in body. Thats why they are taken with milk or food or in form of capsules.
DV-DH4alpha present in horliks- given to younger childres for bone strenthening and for good working of their brain.
