1. What are the advantages of tablets, capsules, or liquids? Which medications should not be diluted in 15 to 30mL of water for tube feelings?
2. Answer these questions: "Medications administered by this route have a rapid onset of action, and calculation errors can have serious and even fatal consequences." Why is the onset so rapid? Why are calculations for IV therapy so crucial? What can happen if the right amount of drug is pushed too fast into the bloodstream?
3. Compare the advantages and disadvantages of the metric system and the household system. When is each system appropriate to use?
4. Calculate this dose.
order: ciprofloxacin (cipro) 0.5 g, q12h
Available: Cipro 250 mg tablet
How many tablets of Cipro will be given?
Ans) 1) Tablets and Capsules
This is because years of carefully controlled clinical studies have
confirmed they're reliable, efficient delivery systems for
medications. These products can also provide an increased amount of
active ingredient (much more than a liquid, gel, or gummy). This
results in fewer excipients.
- Medications such as Crushing a quinapril tablet and dissolving it in water for enteral administration allows the carbonate to increase the pH of the solution, causing the drug to rapidly degrade into a poorly absorbed metabolite.
2) Injection straight into the systemic circulation is the most common parenteral route. It is the fastest and most certain and controlled way. It bypasses absorption barriers and first-pass metabolism. It is used when a rapid effect is required, continuous administraction and large volumes.
- Intravenous (IV) drug use in which the drug is injected directly into a vein and enters the bloodstream to reach the brain. This is the quickest way of achieving a psycho-active drug effect. The drug effect is experienced in less than one minute.
- One aspect of potentially harmful IV errors that may go unnoticed, though, is administering an IV medication too quickly. In other cases, the results have been more serious, such as the rapid administration of IV vancomycin, which can lead to severe hypotension and flushing of the upper body (Red Neck Syndrome).
3) The only advantages of the metric system is it's easier to convert between scales and you have the majority of the world using it. The downsides is the metric system is based on random and often poor base measurements. The Imperial system is based on thousands of years of human experience and human scale measurements.
- Household system: Promotes positive self-esteem, self-identity, belonging, integrity and pride amongst all students. Peer support to help promote positive mental health. Promotion of student responsibility and student voice team work, cooperation, communication, leadership skills.
4) Order: ciprofloxacin (cipro) 0.5 g, q12h
Available: Cipro 250 mg tablet
0.5 g = 500 mg
250 mg = 1 tab
500 mg = x
x = 500 ÷ 250 = 2 tablets.
