Environmental Microbiology Did you know there is an International Society for Microbial Ecology? Visit their site: ISM Summarize the page by explaining: What is ecology? How does it relate to microbes? What are some of the subcategories that can be studied regarding this field? please do not copy and paste from google please do not upload a hand written response. type the text out only
Ans 1: Ecology is the study of interactions between organisms and their environmnet. The environment is a combination of the physical environment (comprising temperature, water availability, soil type, wind speed etc) and biotic environment, which comprises any influences on an organism that are exerted by other organism including competition, predation, parasitism and cooperation.
Ans 2: The part of ecology which deals with microbes or microorganism is known as Microbial Ecology. Microorganisms have several vital roles in ecosystem like decomposition, oxygen production, evolution etc. The process of decompsotion makes soil more fertile. The microorganism–microorganism or microorganism–host interactions are the key strategy to colonize and establish a variety of different environments. These interactions involve all ecological aspects like physiochemical changes, metabolite exchanges, metabolite conversion, signaling, chemotaxis etc. Many secondary metabolites which have been reported to be involved in the in the microbial interaction, are usually bioreactive and can perform important fucntion in ecological interaction.
Ans 3: Microbial ecology delas with 3 major domains of life; a) Eukaryota or Eukarya, b) Archaea, c) Bacteria as well as Viruses.
