The Standards of care in ANA Nursing Scopes and Standards of practice describe a competent level of Nursing care. The six levels of care in the nursing process include assessment, diagnosis, outcome identification, planning, implementation, and evaluation. This helps the nurse in clinical decision making and to provide appropriate care to the clients.

I Choose planning - the ANA standards of Nursing Practice.

  • Develop a plan considering patient characteristics.
  • Develop a plan in association with the patient, family, and others.
  • As an LPN I assist in the continuity of plan.
  • Incorporates in implementation with the plan.
  • Integrates current trend and standards in planning.
  • Include strategies within the plan for the promotion and restoration of health and prevention of illness.

The role of Registered Nurse in planning include special criteria such as

  • Use of current evidence, research, and clinical knowledge within the plan.
  • Select strategies that meet complex needs of the patient.
  • Respect and include the patient's values and belief regarding care and therapies in the care plan.
  • Participate in the multidisciplinary approach to the handling of issues.
  • Contributes to the organizational development that supports the planning process.
  • Supports clinical decision-making process.

For Example, Mr.Jack came to the follow-up visits with complaints of fatigue, shortness of breath and past medical history of high cholesterol and blood pressure. The nurse assesses the patient history, check vital signs, the cholesterol level of Mr. Jack. Then the RN nurse explained about his condition and the medication advised to lower the cholesterol levels. She also health educated Mr. Jack about avoidance of salty food and less red meat diet. She planned the next follow-up visits two weeks later, or anytime if he feels worse.
