Tooth decay is the destruction of tooth structure and can affect
both the enemal and the dentin layer of the tooth. Dental decay
occurs when food containing carbohydrates, such as breads, creals,
milk,soda, fruits, cakes, or candy are left on the teeth. The
proportion of children and adolescents with unthread dentak\l decay
can be reduced by these steps.
Dental hygiene:
- Brush teeth at least twice a day with a fluride-containing
toothpaste. Preferably, brush after each meal and especially going
to bed.
- Clean between teeth daily with dental floss or interdental
cleaners, such as the Oral-B Interdental Brush , Reach Stim-U-Dent,
or Sulcabrush.
- Rinse daily with a fluoride-containing mouthwash. Some rinse
also have antiseptic ingredients to help kill bacteria that cause
plaque.
Good eating habits:
- Eat nutritious and balanced meals and limit snacks.
- Avoid carbohydrates such as candy, pretzels and chips, which
can remain on the tooth surface.
- If sticy foods are eaten, brush your teeth soon
afterwards.
- Keep a stockpile of sugarless gum that contains xylitol in the
house as well .
- Drink fluoridated water. At least a pint of fluridated water
each day is needed to protect children children from tooth
decay.
Smile protection:
- Playing sports and participating in activities such as
skateboarding or snowboarding put adolescent at risk for injury to
his teeth and jaw. Mouthguards protectt teeth from breaking or
getting knocked out. Parents should be encourage to wear
mouthguards during sports.
Mouth jewelry:
- Educate adolecent in ways to minimize risks associated with the
jewelry.
- Adolecent must be vigilant about keeping the area clean and
resisting the urge to click the jewelry against their teeth .
Dental Visits:
- Check with your dentist about use of supplemental fluoride,
which strengthens your teeth.
- Ask your dentist about dental sealants (a plastic protective
coaring ) applied to the chewing surfaces of your back teeth to
protect them from decay.
- Visit your dentist regularly for professional cleaning and oral
exam.
