The propagation of fatigue cracks in various aircraft parts has been the subject of extensive study in recent years. The accompanying data consists of propagation lives (flight hours/104) to reach a given crack size in fastener holes intended for use in military aircraft.

0.720    0.864    0.868    0.901    0.926    0.943    0.970    1.008
1.040    1.043    1.081    1.128    1.132    1.157    1.228    1.359

(a) Compute and compare the values of the sample mean x and median . (Round your answers to four decimal places.)

x = flight hours/104
= flight hours/104

(b) By how much could the largest sample observation be decreased without affecting the value of the median? (Enter your answer to three decimal places.)
flight hours/104

Expert Solution

** Note that here i computed this in R just commanding, here you can see for Q(b) i have neglected the decimal places of the last seven data's where the median is changed 1 from 1.024 which is verry less, but we can assume these results as no change in median because interger part remains same. Also it is verry difficult to say that without changing median ,how much data ie largest observation can be decreased!!.
