How does a coronary artery bypass address the problem of a blocked artery? Why is it often not a permanent solution? Please explain
Coronary artery disease is a condition in which the major blood vessels(coronary arteries)that supplying the heart are blocked or diseased. It is the most common type of heart disease. The first sign of CAD is most commonly is heart attack and can be done with open surgery.Coronary artery disease is caused by build up of plaques in the wall of arteries which supply blood to the heart and other parts of body and that causes narrowing of coronary arteries limiting the blood flow to the heart.
In Coronary artery bypass surgery taking the healthy blood vessels from the leg,arm and chest and connecting to the blocked coronary artery. This new blood vessel is known as graft. And this bypass redistribute the rich bloodsupply to the blocked portion of a blocked artery in the heart to improve the blood circulation to the heart muscle. And this can be done when the left coronary artery is severly narrowed or blocked and this is the major blood supply to the heart.CABS is carried in a general anaesthetic and this surgery usually takes about 3 to 6 hours.
Coronary artery bypass surgery is not a permanent solution because this surgery can only relieve symptoms and improve the function of heart and reduce the risk of heart disease. This can can sometimes lead to some other problems such as kidney problem, stroke, infections on the chest wound, bleeding. After the surgery most people remain symtom free for 10 to 15 years but after that there is a chance of obstruction to the new graft which is connected to the body and that requiring another bypass or angioplasty.Healthy outcome for preventing the disease by having medication, avoid smoking, regular exercises, eating organic foods.
So the better prevention of coronary artery disease is having healthydiet, regular exercises, control the cholesterol, blood pressure, avoid alcohol and smoking.
