Part a)

Last month, in the first week (Week 1), the factory arranged overtime of 1 hours on 4 days for 2 machine operators. What is the utilization of operators in Week 1?

Answer –

  • 3 machine operator works in a manufacturing factory.
  • Per week total no of hours worked = No of operators * No of days in a week worked * No of hours per day worked.
  • Implies per week total no of hours worked = 3 * 5 *7.5 hours
  • Hence, (planned hours of work)/ per week total no of hours worked = 112.5 hours per week , planned capacity per week

As per part a)

  • Last month, in the first week (Week 1), the factory arranged overtime of 1 hours on 4 days for 2 machine operators.
  • therefore, extra hours worked = 2* 1 *4 = 8 hours in Week 1
  • Hence Actual total hours worked = 112.5 + 8 = 120.5 hours in week 1

Hence, utilization in week 1

= Actual hours worked / Planned hours of work

= 120.5 / 112.5 = 1.0711 or 107.11%

Part b)

Because of the overtime in Week 1, there was no more overtime in Week 2. One of the operators even idled for 3 hours in 1 workday without anything to do. What is the utilization of operators in Week 2?

Answer –

  • So, normal working hours per week in week 2 = 112.5 hours
  • Idle hours for 1 operator in week 2 = 3 hours for 1 day.
  • Hence, net hours worked in week 2 = normal working hours per week in week 2 - Idle hours for 1 operator in week 2
  • = 112.5-3 = 109.5 hours per week
  • Utilization of operators in week 2

= Actual hours worked / Planned hours of work

= net hours worked in week 2 / normal working hours per week in week 2

= 109.5/112.5

= 0.9733 or 97.33%
