B) Circadian rhythm is an internal and natural process which controls the sleep-wake cycle and resets around every 24 hours.
1. Functions of sleep
Functions of sleep include brain function, memory, and physical health. Sleep plays a very important role in the proper function of the brain, memory, and physical health.
2. Biology of sleep
There are two biological functions - circadian rhythm and homeostasis.
Homeostasis refers to any biological process that is self-regulating and helps the biological system maintain stability. Homeostasis is what drives us to sleep according to the duration of our wakefulness.
3. Realms of sleep
Non REM and REM.
Non-Rapid Eye Movement
There are 3 stages in non-rem sleep
stage 1 - when you have just gone to bed. your eyes are closed but you are easy to wake up.
stage 2 - when you are in light sleep.
stage 3 - when you are deep sleeping.
Rapid Eye Movement
REM occurs approximately after 90 minutes you fell asleep. This is when we have intense dreams.
