Rank the following compounds in order of increasing strength of intermolecular attractions: H2O2, CF4, KF, and CHCl3

Solutions

Expert Solution

CF4 < CHCl3 < H2O2 < KF

In general, inter molecular attraction forces are of following types

Crystal lattice or ionic inetractions

Hydrogen bonding inetractions

Vander vaals attractive forces

Dipole dipole intractions

Induced dipole interactions.

Among the compounds or molecules given, CF4 is a non polar substrate and has no any intermolecular forces except vander vaals attractive forces which are the weakest forces. So CF4 has weakest intermolecular attractions.

Next is the CHCl3 which has some dipole moment and hence exhibits some amount of dipole - dipole attractive forces so it's inetrmolecular strength is higher than CF4.

H2O2 has a possibility of intermolecular hydrogen bonding formation since it has H atoms attached to more electronegative Oxygen atoms. Hydrogen bonding is stronger than vaander vaals and dipole -dipole attraction forces.

Finally KF is an ionic compound. Amoung all the intermolecular forces, ionic lattice forces are the strongest.
