Directions: This assessment exercise has two parts. Please complete part 1 before moving to part 2.
Part 1- Think of a topic or issue or situation that you find very upsetting or frustrating. Do a little “ranting” on that issue. That is, write some very strong and emotional statements about this issue or situation. You might begin with “One thing that makes me furious is __________.” Try to write four or five sentences.
Part 2- Now imagine that you need to “go public” with your feelings and opinions and convince someone else to share at least some of the intensity you feel about this issue. Is there anything in your ranting that you might convert into an argument, a line of reasoning that another person might find legitimate?Read and discuss your sentences with a classmate. Talk about why you feel that some of your state-ments are not good raw material for public reasoning but others might be.
(Part 1 = 1 paragraph, Part 2 = 1 paragraph with 2-3 arguments).
Part 1
Topic is poverty .
Seeing a child begging for money makes me sad and furious at the same time . Sad because I feel helpless because there are so many children in the entire world living in dreadful conditions . Furious because despite having a wealthy system and infrastructure we are unable to bring out the poor families and children out of the well of poverty . Seeing the rich passing by the children in need of help makes me filled with rage and anger . Sometimes I feel like giving my everything to help these children but that would be enough . The question is why this large inequality exists despite having a well built economic and social system . why rich people feed on the poor . Why don't we protest against the rich controlling the system and keeping the poor down .
Part 2
You people must have encountered numerous homeless and hungry children . Don't you think our system is unfair and large inequalities exist .You have excess to everything . You can buy a starbucks coffee any time .But there are children out there or families out there who are struggling to have one full meal a day . There are millions of children who sleep without having their dinner . For them every single day is full of uncertainty . As human beings it is our duty to treat every other human being with dignity and self respect . Everyone should be provided with equal opportunity . It is our moral duty to uplift these families and take a humanistic approach .
