Scenario:

Imagine you are in a strange country where people talk to you, but you do not understand what they are saying. They use strange tools to eat, and you cannot figure out how to use them. They try to feed you food you do not recognize. Sometimes these people seem friendly and caring, but at other times they become angry because you are not doing what they ask you to do. When they try to remove your clothes and take you into a room to shower you, you become frightened and upset, and you do not know what will happen next. At times, other strangers come to your room and bring gifts. They talk kindly to you, but you do not know them. They seem upset when you do not respond to their gifts and gestures. The doors and windows in this country are all locked, and you cannot find a way out so that you can go home.

a. How would you react if you were the person in this situation? Why?

b. What methods might you use to try to communicate with the person in this situation?

c. Why would the person want to go home? What does “home” mean to him or her?

d. How will this exercise help you when you care for a confused person?

Solutions

Expert Solution

a) if I were in this situation I will try to take it more positively and interestingly.

If I am in a strange country, I will try my best to adjust the people around me.I should try to talk with the people around me and if I'm not understanding I will make them know about my difficulty in understanding the language. As we are human being, survival of the fittest is the main aim, without becoming a upset or depressed I will be enthusiastic to learn a new language and understand a new way of culture. Even if I don't know how to eat using strange tools, I may request to the people surrounding me to give a demonstration regarding using these tools. Even if they are asking me to remove the clothes, I may politely inform them that I am not comfortable in doing so. I will consider all the people around me as human beings and try to convince myself that it's their way of life and I should adjust to to the situations around me. I should also thank those people who give their valuable time to meet me with precious gifts.

b) since I don't know the language, I am not able to speak their language and understand them, so I may use non verbal forms of communication. Using nonverbal forms in ccommunication, it helps them to understand what I want to communicate. For example shaking hands for bye or shaking your head for no. Also talking slowly and using hand gestures helps to communicate with those people who do not speak our language. Showing pictures or demonstrating through pictures also helps in communicating.

c) most of the people they prefer to go home because they are not able to adjust in this situation. They feel very depressed and upset when they cannot speak or cannot understand. They even feel it as a strange thing. They feel very bad when they are scolded by the people and even cannot recognise between loving people and those people who is angry. They consider all the people around the country as strangers and cannot except those people who are very caring towards them.

For these people home means full of freedom, caring and love. In home fed up with food, care, love and protection. Home is a place where they feel so much secured and not even scared to live or do something. They are well protected under the arms of the parents and feels so satisfied.

d) when I care for a confused person, this exercise will help me a lot. Here we could see people are not satisfied and feels insecured. They even are very confused about what to speak and what to do. They even feel very upset when people in that country are angry at them.

When I am caring for a this kind of person, I will make him or her to understand the fact that survival of the fittest should be the main aim. I will help them to communicate using non verbal forms of communication and will try to give strength and confidence. Even I will make them feel secured and asked not to become upset in such kind of situations. Even I will help them to take most of the the situations in a positive manner and try to deal with those with enthusiasm and courage. I can also help that person to speak in a very polite way to make them understand those things which you are not comfortable.
