“Is torture of terrorists and their families morally permissible? Why or why not?”

Solutions

Expert Solution

  • Torture of any kind is considered to be illegal under law,but still it is used especially with terrorists and other criminals. So,it is unethical, but sometimes torturing the captured terrorist is needed to force to them to provide necessary information.Though, torturing their families is morally wrong.
  • Under certain circumstances, torture has to be used, especially when we can avoid a much larger harm,by using it as an interrogation device for the terrorists. If for instance, the terrorist network has planted a bomb in some building and it is about to explode, the police has the terrorist under surveillance, now it becomes the responsbility of the law makers to stop the bomb from exploding as so many lives are at stake.
  • Even the citizens, the family members of the passengers would want the police to use every possible means to stop the bomb from exploding, even if it involves pain ans suffering being imposed on the terrorist.Though torture of any kind is unethical, but sometimes desperate times leads to desperate measures, making it permissible,as the last resort.
  • Though, torturing the families of terrorists,is not something I agree with, but sometimes even they might be having important information which they wouldnt reveal without coercion. They can be forced, but inflicting harm on them is something I consider morally wrong.
