Risks related to Platform Dependence

  • Switching from one platform to another is costly for a big project.
  • Limited edge over other competitive companies working in the same environment/platform.
  • Company's operations revolve around platform dependence solutions which in turn limit the possibilities of many innovative approaches.

"It worked on my machine" is a common phrase that most software development teams are familiar with. The software is working on developer computer but failing on productions. It can happen because of the following reasons :

  • Leftover configuration on developer machine from previous project helped the code to work during development phase. It can be solved by isolating the project environment so that previous projects libraries and configurations don't interfere with the new projects. Example, Virtual machine environments or cloud based environments for the project.
  • Code merging is inconsistent. This can be solved by making code merging frequently, run automated testing on it and deploy it. This process should be done frequently to maintain a good project development practice.
  • Some directory or path in code is given based on developer machine directories structure. This can be solved by changing it to a general directory structure.
