What is convergence theory (3 pts)? What is cumulative disadvantage theory (3 pts)? Explain these theories in your old words. Which theory (cumulative (dis)advantage or/and convergence theory) explains the American aging experiences better? Why do you think so, use examples.

Solutions

Expert Solution

Convergence theory suggests that when less industrialized nations become advanced developed nations, they would tend to follow the same pattern of the developed nations which would in turn create a global culture. This would mean that when countries tend adopt the practices of the technologically advanced nations due to globalization, thus would adopt their culture of treating people. Cumulative disadvantage theory suggests that social systems create inequality which is tied to the age. This would mean that this disadvantage would expose the aged to risks while those who are advantaged would get enough opportunity. Thus. In my opinion, cumulative disadvantage theory makes more sense regarding the inequality the elderly would face in the society. This is because of the fact that culture is evolutionary and each culture would keep changing thus, creating a global culture would be very much impossible.
