Important constants needed for the calculation :
Coefficient of linear expansion of aluminium
Coefficient of volume expansion of aluminium bottle,
Coefficient of volume expansion of Mercury,
Given that :
Volume of the aluminium bottle (V) = 1 L
Initial temperature (Ti) = 20°C
Final temperature (Tf) = 110°C
Temperature difference, = 110 - 20 = 90°C
Solution :
Increase in volume of Mercury =
= 0.0162 L
Increase in the volume of Al bottle =
= 0.00621 L
Amount of Mercury spilled out is the difference between volume increased in Mercury and volume increased in bottle
ie, Volume of Mercury spilled = 0.0162 - 0.00621
= 0.00999 L Hg
By converting into mL,
Volume of Mercury spilled out = 9.99 mL
