1)Apple lists the smelters in its supply chain as part of the supplier responsibility reports it makes available to the public.Apple uses dozens of third party supplers to provide the raw materials and makes direct purchases from them. The materials that go into making I phone include

*Aluminium (24 percent of it is aluminium)

Tungsten(0.02 percent)

gold

Nickel(used in microphone)

lead

Idiumtin oxide(conductor for the touch screen)

Aluminium oxide (uses in casting)

Silicon oxide, arsenic and galium (used in microchips )

Lithium and cobalt ( they are used for making batteries along with aluminium).

Apart from the metals mentioned above tantalum, rare earth metals and tin are also used in making an I phone.

2) ln the production of iphones , each ton of ore processed for metal extraction requires three tons of water. Production of one billion iphones will mean polluting hundred billion litres of water.

3) Wayne westerman was recongnised for his exceptional english intelligence from his childhood. He was a way ahead of his peers. He grew up with a mother who had chronic illness and he himself suffered from RSI from his University days onwards.Typing was very difficult and painful. He wanted to ease out the pain his mother suffered. He thought of making things easy for her.He worked with John Elias on muti - touch research which marked the beginning of the touch screen functionality we use in apple today

* Apple's claim that it invented muti-touch is actually not valid. Development of multi -touch was a gradual process which began with the Idea of revolutionizing mobile phone technology.

4) Lithium for iphone is mined in Atacama desert, chile. The labour conditions are very harsh there.chilean miners work. They are expected to stand on their feet and work for twelve hours a day. They get their payment only if they have found anything.other wise they are left empty handed.Apple has done nothing to improve their condition.

5) Apple has an e -waste dump in Nairobi, where many phones end up.This e- waste is extremely toxic.Re usable parts are carried away to designated locations.
