Julianna travels down a water slide, leaving it with a velocity of 4.2m/s horizontally. She then experiences projectile motion, landing in a swimming pool 1.2m below the slide.
a) For how long is Julianna in the air?
b) Determine her horizontal range while in the air.
c) Determine Julianna’s exact velocity upon entering the water.
Given data:
Horizontal velocity of Julianna = 4.20 m/s
Horizontal acceleration = 0
Initial Vertical velocity = 0
Vertical downward acceleration = acceleration due to gravity = 9.81 m/s^2
Vertical height form the slide = 1.2 m
From Equation of motion in vertical direction
So, Julianna will be in air for 0.4946 seconds.
(ii) Horizontal range while in the air
From Equation of motion in horizontal direction
Horizonatal range in air = 2.077 m
(iii) Julianna’s exact velocity upon entering the water
Horizontal velocity of Julianna = 4.2 m/s
Vertical downward velocity of Julianna =
So net velocity =
