Smoking behaviour:
Nicotine is a parasympathomimetic alkaloid, which causes alertness and calmness, it also increases the rate of heart rate (stimulant activity). At excitatory synapses, nicotine increases the dopaminergic responses, which play a key role in the reinforcement of addictive behaviors. The stimulant effects are only seen at lower doses, but at higher doses, it is a CNS depressant. Its stimulant effects are responsible for its addiction by means of smoking and chewing tobacco. Nicotine also causes dependence and if it is suddenly quit by the person, it causes withdrawal symptoms such as restlessness, mental disturbance, anxiety, sleeplessness, etc.
Smokers are more prone to the risk of developing lung cancer, approximately 80% to 90% of lung cancer cases are associated with smoking, means there is a direct relationship between cancer and smoking, and this is known as causal relationship.
Nicotine present in the tobacco causes cardiac stimulation by increasing the sympathetic activity. It actually disrupts the automaticity of the cardiac cells, elevates the heart rate during rest, which gradually leads to cardiac insufficiency and cardiomyopathy. Smoking generates carbon monoxide, which binds to haemoglobin and decreases oxygen carrying capacity, thereby by decreasing the performance of the cardiovascular system.
Smoking not only damages the personal health, but it also pollutes the environment by causing air pollution, water pollution, and land pollution. Cigarette smoke contains approximately 4000 chemicals, which pollute the air when released into the atmosphere, similarly, the cigarette butts are released into the water, which causes water pollution.
