Extraneous variables are defined as independent variables that are present in every scientific experiment conducted by the researchers. These variables are measured as extra variables that change continuously as per the conditions of the experiment.

The types of extraneous variables in an experiment may be from different backgrounds, heights, weights, personalities etc. More specifically light, temperature, weather changes etc. Furthermore there is no way to avoid extraneous variables in research as its very crucial factor in the study. A researcher can control extraneous variables by identifying the variables that could affect the dependent variable as per the desired effects in the study.

These should be controlled in an effective way since thee directly affect our research findings.

Methods to Control Extraneous Variables:

Extraneous variables are a challenge to be controlled in the scientific experiments. As against the compliance of the research and the researcher, they tend to have an impact on the dependant variable and hugely affect the outcomes of the experiment.

Hence there are following approaches by which the effect of the extraneous variables can be controlled:

  • Randomization of samples
  • Matching the different groups of confounding variables
  • By the use of experimental designs
  • Other Statistical Controls: as, Analysis of Covariance (ANOVA)

Hence by utilizing these concepts and the designs specifically statistical tools the extraneous variables can be effectively controlled and optimized for the better and more accurate as well as reproducible results.
