Jack recently attended a one-day instructor-led class that concluded with a written assessment. Throughout the day each lesson was reviewed, which focused on the main points presented during that particular lesson. While the test was all multiple choice, very few of the main points that were presented and/or reviewed were on the test. Jack, as well as others, was extremely frustrated.

Discuss how applying the ADDIE model and acknowledging adult learning principles could have provided a better learning experience. What would you have done differently?

Answer - The ADDIE model stands for Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation. Let's understand each of these phases considering its benefit in training processes:

  • Analysis - This phase is to analyze training needs and how can training improve the current situation. A good understanding of the situation, the changes expected would help formulate a consolidated training plan in this phase.
  • Design - When training needs are understood and a training plan is set, the next phase is to design the training modules and create a road map for progress. The outcomes of this phase are the design of strategy, delivery methods, duration, assessment, feedback.
  • Development - Now when the training needs and model structure is decided, the next phase is to develop these modules with each element matching the design phase outcomes. The outcome of this phase is the development of course content.
  • Implementation - This is the phase of the actual training, where the trainer trains the trainees on the subject matter. If the previous phases were executed with precision then the training should be executed as in the best interest of both the trainer and the trainees.
  • Evaluation - Now at the very last phase it is important to look back to evaluate whether the training needs identified at the very first phase have been fulfilled and the trainees are at a better level of knowledge and understanding of the subject matter. Feedback from the trainees would help in further improvement of future training courses.

The above steps of the ADDIE model provide the framework to help meet the training requirement with the training process so that the training can be best utilized for knowledge enhancement by Jack and others and a sense of fulfilment and knowledge gain can be accomplished by the trainees after the training session is over.

I, as a trainer, would have given more time to understand and assess the training requirement and then execute the training process as per the ADDIE approach to help trainees maximise the outcome of my training.
