Workplace deviant behavior varies from negative to positive, whenever employees threaten the well-being of an organization, is considered as negative workplace deviance and when employees do some creative or innovative work it is considered as positive workplace deviance. Bennett and Robinson (2003) have defined workplace deviance as “purposeful behavior that violates organizational norms and is intended to harm the organization, its employees, or both”. Robbins and Judge (2007) have defined deviant workplace behavior as “voluntary behavior that violates significant organizational norms and, in doing so, threatens the well-being of the organization or its members”.
a-What can employers do to prevent employees from engaging in negative deviant behaviors?
b-Discuss the impact of positive deviant behaviors in organizations.
Answer;
✓ deviant behaviour refers to employees behaviour, that violates rules, regulations, policies, and norms of the organisation, that impacts on the entire organisation and its people.
Positive deviant behaviour could bring greater benefits and helps the organisation to excel. Negative deviance behaviour damages the organisational growth, encourage counterproductive behaviour and negatively impacts the workplace environment.
a) employers need to prevent negative deviant behaviour by understanding the employees needs and their interests and observing their acts in order to find out why they are Indulging in such acts. Employers or managers must give importance to equity, fairness, and involve members in Decision making. Proper monitoring and guidance must be given to the employees, and they needs to be trained to make them understand ethical values, organisational policies, diversity, and other aspects. Work environment needs to be made positive with flexibility and encouragement to the Innovativeness and creative ideas, to keep the members active and engaged. Surveillance needs to be strengthened, without invading personal or private space of the employees, and career development must be considered for providing a sense of security to them.
b) impact of positive deviant behaviour in an organisation:
Positive deviant behaviour like criticising the wrong acts and correcting the behaviours of seniors could bring improvements and make the seniors aware of their conduct. Using Innovative ways and creative ideas for easing the work, will bring greater competitive advantage to the firm. Employees with positive deviant behaviour will not support the dysfunctional directions and instructions, rather they try to change them by approaching the seniors and keeping their thoughts for the benefit of the firm.
