Describe the responsible party model, explain why it advocates believe it would make for a more democratic governement in the United States. Do you agree? Why? what do you think are the strenghts and weaknessess of this model. Explain.
Answer.
The roles of political parties in the United States of America are to attain political power within a government by participating in electoral campaigns, and to try to gain support by campaigning in the general public. According to the responsible party model, political parties have distinct platforms which they should carry out when their members get elected. Presidential Candidates who are nominated by their respective parties would then take responsibility for the performance of government once elected.
Parties function in the legislature in a variety of ways. In the US Congress the parties are divided along majority and minority party lines and much of the leadership is decided by caucuses which function within a party. In this way, they are based on the idea of a truly representative leadership. In the responsible party model, The members of the legislature usually vote with the rest of the party. However, it is my opinion that this model cannot work effectively all the time because of the size, checks and balances, and other factors and parties may ultimately have differing opinions amongst themselves but which can make it difficult for a single individual to be nominated as a candidate with clear majority.
