Describe the structure-property relations responsible for slip in metals. Why is Cu more ductile than MgO?
Solution :- Slip in metal , means when we apply pressure , strain or try to break it , it does not break instead take some other shape i.e the layer of metals or crystal system slip over each other instead of breaking like ionic conpounds Ex-sodium chloride . The reason lies in its structure
Metals are bound together by mettalic bond ,electron sea model so all valance electrons are free to move over metal surface unlike other ionic componds where the electron density is bound to perticular metals this structural property makes a difference . In metals their is free flow of electron over metal surface rather then strong repulsion of negative charge so if strain is provided over metal two layer slip over each other rather breaking apart due to this property metals are ductile ( can form wires ) and malleable ( can be beaten to sheets) .
b) Cu is more ductile the MgO , because cu is metal and MgO is ionic in nature so due to their structure difference Cu is ductile whereas MgO is white powder or breakable crystal.
