Researchers plan to study the weight gain of cows during a 3-month period. They wish to test at alpha = 0.01 if the mean weight gain exceeds 15 kg. Further, it is important for the researchers to detect if the mean weight gain is as large as 27 kg. An earlier study indicated that the standard deviation of the weight gains was around 14 kg. Since weight gains are normally distributed a t-test is to be used.

(a) If the researchers used a sample size of 22 what would be the power of the test in detecting if the mean weight gain is as large a 27 kg? Use R, showing the command you used and the result.

(b) Use Table 21 to determine the sample size required in order to have a power of 0.99 to detect if the mean weight gain is as large a 27 kg.

A dairy man thinks that the average weight gain of his cows depends on two factors : the type of grain which they are fed and the type of grass which they are fed. The dairyman has four different types of grain from which to choose and three different types of grass from which to choose. He would like to determine if there is a particular combination of grain and grass which would lead to the greatest weight gain on...

The weight gain of women during pregnancy has an important effect on the birth weight of their children. If the weight gain is not adequate, the infant is more likely to be small and will tend to be less healthy. In a study conducted in two countries, weight gains (in kilogram) of women during the third trimester of pregnancy were measured. The results are summarized in the following table. Country n ȳ s2 Egypt 6 3.8 5.76 Kenya 10 3.3...

A researcher wanted to study the effect of type of diet on weight gain in mice. The researcher was interested in 3 specific diets: standard mouse chow diet, “junk” food diet, and an organic diet.  A total of 54 mice were randomly assigned to receive one of the 3 types of diets (18 in each group). The outcome variable (response variable) was weight gain (in grams) over a 1 month period. The 3 data sets provided below are for the same...

People gain weight when they take in more energy from food than they expend. Some researchers wanted to investigate the link between obesity and energy spent on daily activity. Choose 20 healthy volunteers who don't exercise. Deliberately choose 10 who are lean and 10 who are mildly obese but still healthy. Attach sensors that monitor the subjects' every move for 10 days. The table below presents data on the time (in minutes per day) that the subjects spent standing or...

Is it true that students tend to gain weight during their first year in college? Cornell Professor of Nutrition David Levitsky recruited students from two large sections of an introductory health course. Although they were volunteers, they appeared to match the rest of the freshman class in terms of demographic variables such as sex and ethnicity. The students were weighed during the first week of the semester, then again 12 weeks later at the end of the semester (weights are...
