Under what conditions supplementation with probiotics might be recommended? Do you think that probiotic use may be rejected because of cost? Is there any way to measure probiotic levels in the large intestine to determine if supplementation is necessary?
PROBIOTICS
These are the live bacteria or microorganism that help in treatment and prevention of illness. It helps in promotion of good flora of intestine.
Q1.
Under which Conditions probiotic may be used
- Obesity- use of probiotic in obesity have potential effect on body weight.
- Hypercholesteremia- probiotic helps in improvement of lipid profile
- Irritable bowel syndrome - use of probiotic reduces the symptoms of IBS.
- Antibiotic associated diarrhea- antibiotic use may cause diarrhea by decreasing microbial diversity, use of probiotic reduce the antibiotic induce diarrhea.
- Atopic dermatitis- it is seen that use of probiotic may reduce risk of developing of atopic dermatitis and leads to significant reduction in atopic dermatitis.
- Recommended use in gastrointestinal diseases
- Bacterial vaginosis
- Urinary tract infections
Q2.
Probiotic rejection
In my opinion. Cost may be one of the factors but sometime heath matters a lot, but in some cases spending so much of money on probiotic and if it didn’t give desirable result or high dose of probiotic may lead to antibiotic resistance. High cost probiotic is not bearable by everyone and antibiotic resistance may be the cause of rejection in healthcare setup.it totally my opinion you can add up in it.
Q3.
GUT MICROBIOME TEST- in which feaces sample is taken and send for lab analysis of microorganism.
Yes, we can measure the probiotic or native bacterial level with help of microbiome test.
It just like DNA test but they don’t map genes, they, map organism in the gut. Help in identifying the increase of the any specific species, level of microorganisms and status of microorganism in some disease ( such as crohns disease, IBD etc.) etc.,
And yes, it helps in determining that probiotic supplementation are required or not.
FOR ANY DOUBT POST QUESTION, IT WILL BE HIGHLY APPRECIATED.
