1. What do you understand by the term ‘Flexible Manufacturing systems’ explain the different functionalities of this system?
Answer :-
manufacturing system:
A manufacturing system is a network of processes throught which parts flow and whose purposed is to generate profit now and in the future process line factory to distribution to retailer.
Flexible Manufacturing System(FMS) :
FMS are highly automated cell, consisting of a group of processing stations (usually CNC machine tools), interconnected by an automated material handling and storage system, and controlled by an integrated computer system.
hardware components: work stations - CNC machines, material handling system - conveyors, automated vehicles, central control computer - to coordinate the activities of the components for smooth operation software and control functions, human labor.
FMS applications:
machining - most common application of FMS technology, assembly, inspection, sheet metal processing (punching, shearing, bending, and forming), forging.
There are various functionalities of FMS:
• Workstation control
• Distribution of control instructions to workstations
• Production control
• Traffic control
• Shuttle control
• Tool control
• Performance monitoring and reporting
• Diagnostics
