A manufacturing system is a network of processes throught which parts flow and whose purposed is to generate profit now and in the future process line factory to distribution to retailer.

Flexible Manufacturing System(FMS) :

FMS are highly automated cell, consisting of a group of processing stations (usually CNC machine tools), interconnected by an automated material handling and storage system, and controlled by an integrated computer system.

hardware components: work stations - CNC machines, material handling system - conveyors, automated vehicles, central control computer - to coordinate the activities of the components for smooth operation software and control functions, human labor.

FMS applications:

machining - most common application of FMS technology, assembly, inspection, sheet metal processing (punching, shearing, bending, and forming), forging.

There are various functionalities of FMS:

• Workstation control

• Distribution of control instructions to workstations

• Production control

• Traffic control

• Shuttle control

• Tool control

• Performance monitoring and reporting
