Gravity is important in physics and in real life situations. It is important in our study of functions. The formula for a projectile is: s(t) = –1/2 gt 2 + vot + ho where g is the acceleration due to gravity, vo is the initial velocity, ho is the initial height, t is time, and s(t) is height at given time t.
A. Conduct research on the topic of gravity as it relates to functions, specifically the projectile formula stated above to further your understanding of this important concept.
B. A ball is thrown vertically upward with an initial velocity of 96 feet per second. The distance s (in feet) of the ball from the ground after t seconds is s(t) = 96t – 16t2.
1. At what time will the ball strike the ground?
2. For what time t is the ball more than 128 feet above the ground?
3. When will the ball reach its highest peak? How high is it above the ground?
4. In this formula s(t) = 96t – 16t2, determine the value that corresponds to g in
f(t) = –gt2 + vot + ho.
5. Explain how the equation relates to gravity and
the projectile formula.
We can solve this using equations of motion .Also a quantity attains it's maximum (or mininun) when it's derivative becomes equal to zero.
