Gravity is important in physics and in real life situations.  It is important in our study of functions.  The formula for a projectile is:   s(t) = –1/2 gt 2 + vot + ho    where g is the acceleration due to gravity, vo is the initial velocity, ho is the initial height, t is time, and s(t) is height at given time t.

A.  Conduct research on the topic of gravity as it relates to functions, specifically the projectile formula stated above to further your understanding of this important concept.

  1. Reliable sources will include a minimum of one book reference (not our class textbook) and one journal article.  See the research librarians in our library to understand reliable sources, how to search for these resources, and APA style.  These references will be provided at the bottom of your report.
  2. Carefully read and understand the gravity and its relationship to projectiles from the resources.
  3. Write a one-page paper (double-spaced, 1-inch margins, Times New Roman, font size 14).
    • Your name, course information, and date are to be in the top left corner of the first page – single spaced.
    • The content should include a brief history of the projectile formula and its use in functions.
    • It is to be written in APA style.
    • Complete references are to be provided at the end of the report.

B.  A ball is thrown vertically upward with an initial velocity of 96 feet per second.  The distance s (in feet) of the ball from the ground after t seconds is s(t) = 96t – 16t2.

1.  At what time will the ball strike the ground?

2.  For what time t is the ball more than 128 feet above the ground?

3.  When will the ball reach its highest peak?  How high is it above the ground?

4.  In this formula  s(t) = 96t – 16t2, determine the value that corresponds to g in

      f(t) = –gt2 + vot + ho.

5.  Explain how the equation relates to gravity and the projectile formula.

Strategic bargaining is focused on the rules of the game. However, in real-life situations the rules are not always clearly pronounced. This form of bargaining works best when all parties are sure that the rule will be followed. Strategic bargaining often focuses on who moves first and who can commit to a bargaining position. An example of this type of bargain could be when two business partners are negotiating a new business contract. Both want to get the most of...
