The great man phase or theory of leadership is a philosophical perspective on leadership .

Assumptions

• The leaders are born and not made and posses certain traits which were inherited
• Great leaders can arise when there is a great need.

Trace back to 450 B.C. to the late 1940s A.D. This philosophical or theoretical perspective on leadership supports that leaders are not made, but are born with certain inherited genetic traits that mould them outstanding leaders. Another component of this perspective is that these leaders rise to the occasion, and their skills and abilities are most paramount during times of crisis etc. An example of an influential leader from this phase would be Napoleon who reinvigorated the French nation and led it to victory against many enemies.

5 BC - Julius Caesar becomes the first dictator of Rome. Caesar makes his famous Crossing of the Rubicon and defeats Pompey in a civil war to become the supreme ruler of Rome. Caesar was also a good orator, a trait that is critical for every world leader even to this day.

As a leader, Caesar also fought for the rights of common people. As a young man in 78BC, after Sullah’s death, he returned home and turned to legal advocacy.

It is at this time that he established himself as an orator, speaking with a high-pitched voice and commanding tone.

He was against corruption and extortion.

He had the ability to articulate his ideas flawlessly and was able to convince the people of his ideas by using wise words and attractive language.
