What is stereotyping and what are the five ways that you can confront your own stereotypes when working with a diverse population of people.
STEREOTYPING
In social psychology , a stereotype is an over generalized belief about a particular category of particular people. It is an expectation that people might have about every person of a particular group.Stereotyping in health care environment means, poorer health outcomes.
FIVE WAY THAT YOU CAN CONFRNT YOUR OWN STEREOTYPE
1) Set expections and gather feedback
We should have some positive expectation regarding our performances and should set that one at correct time. After that dont forget to gather feedback The more feedback you gather , the more date you have to build out specific programs.
Survey question you should consider include Likert Scale ( Strongly agree .Strongly disagree )
2) Encourage elective participation.
This is where most efforts to curb bias go wrong. Most mandatory diversity and bias programs come with a subtle message.Complete this training , or else. Threat don't create champions , they create silent rebels.
3) Build Bias Awareness.
The next step is to educate your willing volurnteers. For those unfamilar with unconcious bias , it can be a touch concept to fully appreciate.A good starting point is Harvard's project implicit. The goal for bias awareness is to make the decision - making process more mindful.
4) Reduce Opportunities for Bias Through Structure.
Certain business processes are particularly prone to bias.Others help remedy it.We should make some structure to reduce opportunities for bias.
5) Measure and Experiment.
As with any initiative , setting measurable goal is important . While the ultimate goal is building an inclusive workplace that facilitate fairer processes and decisions.Setting targets for bias understanding and awareness ( as measured by follow-up survey)is a much better starting point.
