Calcium hydroxide, also known as slaked lime, is the cheapest strong base available and it is used in industrial processes win which low concentrations of base are required. Only 0.190 g of Ca(OH) 2 dissolves in 119 mL of water at 25 o C . What is the concentration of hydroxide ions in 165 mL of a solution containing the maximum amount of dissolved calcium hydroxide?
m = 0.19 Ca(OH)2
MW = 74.093
mol = 0.19/74.093 = 0.0025643
V = 119 ml = 0.119 L
M = mol/L = 0.0025643/0.119 = 0.02154
note that concnetration is independent of volume so
Ca(OH)2 = 0.02154 M
OH- ions are double that
0.02154*2 = 0.04308 M o f OH- ions
