Much debate exists within the literature about leadership and management. Kotter (1990:103) argues that management and leadership are “two distinctive and complementary systems of action” and that the former involves coping with complexity, while the latter involves coping with change.
1.1 Discuss in detail, with the use of examples, the fundamental differences between the concept of leadership versus management. (20 marks
Management and Leadership are two distinctive and complementary systems of action. Both of them are positive terms and essential for any organization.
The difference between the both are -
1. Leadership is the ability to lead people while management is managing or handling them in a proper way.
2. A manager needs to have commercial awareness while a leader might not need that much of commercial awareness.
3. Leadership is about inspiring while management is about planning to achieve a certain goal.
4. Leaders have a motivational style while mangers have authoritarian style of working.
5. Leaders develop power over people while the managers exercise this power over people.
6. Leaders should what to do while managers tell what to do.
Example ->
Mahatma Gandhi is the biggest leader in India you can get inspire from him but if you are a minister you have to follow what the Prime Minister tells you.
Similarly FW Taylor was a great leader but if you want to succeed you have to look upto Henry Ford.
