Ideas are the key to innovation. Without them, there isn't much to execute and because execution is the key to learning, new ideas are necessary for making any kind of improvement. It's obvious that ideas alone won't make innovation happen, as you need to be able to build a systematic process such as an Kaizen System in the example referred for managing those ideas. The point of ideation isn't just about generating tons of them but about paying attention to the quality of those as well.
An improvement for change can be called as an Idea. So how does this work?
While we are into a problem and need a solution, we do a lot of Brainstorming or we make a team and a set of intellectuals generate ideas.
Define the Idea: It is very important that idea generated is clear and easy to understand.
To Change the mounting design from Direct Mounting to Separate Blower and Motor Assembly with belt driven.
Lets take an example:
Define problem: Frequent failure of the blower motor leading to an MTBF of 930 hrs which adversely affects the productivity of plant and also adversely impact the quality of the product..
Objectives of system: To put a system which shall eliminate the number of breakdown which shall result in improvement of my plant equipment efficiency.
Requirement: A team of Technical Staff and Workers who shall work upon for identifying solutions. A software tool or an hardware component.
Main challenges of system development Or Why system fail?
The main challenge is the acceptance of that 1 idea to all the rest of the team memebrs. This is similar to any idea when applied. Therefore, it is very important that all the members in the system are aligned to the generated idea.
Communication is an important tool during idea generation and its implementation. The more people in the system are aware of the idea and its acceptance, the more is its effective implementation.
Target population: In this example was the set of other workers and staff working in this plant who used to face the issue of frequently attending this breakdown. Reoslving it shall boost their morale and also help them utilize their work time for many other value adding activity. End result was the MTBF increased to 2435 hrs.
Similar ideas as such can be implemented across Organization to imporve Productivity and Morale.
