The pediatric nurse is preparing to administer an antiparkinsonism drug to a 14-year-old client. What is the most likely indication for this use of antiparkinsonian drugs?
Parkinson disease is a disorder of central nervous sysytem that is caused by brain disorders,brain injuries,certain drugs and toxins.Is a condition that causes a combination of movement abnormalities such as tremor,slow movement,impaired speech,stiffness,loss of balance that is resulting from loss of dopamine containing nerve cells.Parkinsonism cannot be cured but can reduce the symptoms by adequate administration of anti -parkinsonian drugs.Parkinsonism is caused by several degenerative disese,most important being Parkinsonism disease.The brain is atrophic or may be normally externally.Parkinson disease is an uncommon movement disorder in childhood.
In the case of children drugs which is used to treat parkinson disease is Diphenhydramine.diphenhydramine can be given as tablet,capsule,or in solution(mouth)and by intravenous or intramuscular injection or can be given by topically.
The indication for this use of antiparkinsonian drug is used to treat variety of condition and prevent dystonias,insomnia,urticaria,vertigo,pruritis and motion sickness.diphenhydramine also possess local anesthetic properties.Adult dosing given as same as in the case of children above 12 years and more with mild symptoms,moderate symprtoms amd more sever symptoms.In the case of insomnia,25 to 50 mg by mouth as bedtime as needed,start 30 minute before bedtime.
Adverse effects are headache,drowsiness,ataxia,constiption,tachycardia,early menses,blurred vision.
Diphenhydramine overdose may cause flushed skin,urinary retension,delirium,agitation,hallucination,tachycardia, elevated body temperature,blurry vision,mydriasis.
