Should the U.S. government be responsible for providing all citizens with computers and access to the Internet? Or is gaining Internet access an individual responsibility?
The US government should provide internet access to all citizens because if left to the private markets these services would be made available with high prices and only a certain groups will be able to afford it. Internet access is not a luxury and its a necessity in this information and service based era. Having internet access also helps people be informed about what is happening around the world and participate in the public discussions and hold the government accountable. Also, it provides space for innovation as individuals can startup with innovative ideas like big players such as Google who started in the garage.
But free internet access is not beneficial if the citizens are not able to afford a basic computer or phone. This is why it is essential that the government provides atleast one computer in each household who cannot avoid those. Providing both computer and internet access will be very useful if the low income individuals would want to enhance skills. This opportunity to enhance skills will provide them with better opportunities to earn.
