write an one page summary : what is the triple axis spectrometer (TAS) ?
Add any references you used at the end of the page
Solution:-
Triple axis spectrometry(TAS) uses an inelastic neutron scattering method to measure the scattering function of energy and momentum of space at any point accessible by the apparatus by using the neutron diffraction of suitable energy and wavelength.
The basic components of the TAS are as follows:
1.Neutron beam -A beam of neutron is sent to the sample.
2.Collimator -It uniformly sends the signal in a definite direction.
3.Monochromator - A single wavelength is used.
4.Sample -Neutron beam of monovalent nature hits the sample.
5.Analyser- The wave is analyzed and energy and momentum are recorded.
6. Reactor-Finally it reaches the reactor after resolving the particle nature in space and time.
First developed by Bertram Brockhouse at National Research Experimental (NRX) reactor at Chalk River Laboratories, Canada.First results from the prototype were published in January 1955 and the first true triple-axis spectrometer was built in 1956. It was for this great discovery Bertram Brockhouse shared 1994 Nobel prize for Physics for this development, which allowed elementary excitations, such as phonons and magnons, to be observed directly. The Nobel work "for pioneering contributions in development of neutron scattering techniques and their studies of condensed matter" and "development of neutron spectroscopy".
